Good Readers Actively Engage With The Text

Good readers become involved in their reading. ‘Engage’ is a broad and sometimes abstract term, but it can be broken down into specific strategies. As they read, enthusiastic readers:

  • access prior knowledge
  • assimilate new material into current knowledge
  • monitor their comprehension
  • confirm predictions as they read
  • use ‘fix up’ strategies, such as slowing down, chunking pieces of information, or rereading confusing sections if they begin to lose meaning
  • use strategies to help understanding and retention of information-such as note taking, creating mental images, summarising, using graphic forms such as concept maps and retrieval charts and using a dictionary, glossary or thesaurus
  • ask questions and search for answers
  • distinguish major content from detail.
